Charli XCX has opened up about her mental health and the stigma surrounding therapy as she shares the story behind Charli – her most personal album yet.

Released on September 20, Charli is the pop singers third album which features some high profile collabs and explores her journey with self-improvement and examination, including her experiences with the stigma surrounding therapy.

In an interview with Apple Musics Beats 1 Radio show the 27-year-old said she is being more honest than ever before and that making the record, which was produced with A. G. Cook who also worked on Pop 2, was like therapy.

Despite not having accessed therapy herself, The 1999 singer says she wants to spread the message that therapy is a great form of medical treatment that should be more widely accepted in the UK.

Im not anti-therapy at all. Ive never been anti it; I think its brilliant and great and I think everybody should have it because its like going to the doctors, she said. Its like you go for a physical checkup and so you should do the same for your mental health.

She explained she felt nervous in the past about needing therapy, largely due to the stigma attached to it in the UK.

“I feel like there is this stigma in the UK about, Oh therapy, its a bit LA isnt it? I really do think that. I think its less common here to be very open about it, Charli said. I think theres also a thought that only really rich people can get a therapist and I dont think thats the case.

After some research, the Boys singer now feels she would benefit from going to therapy and hopes to try it in the future.

Ive never done it before, just because its felt a bit alien to me, but Ive never been anti it, I think Ive just been nervous. Now Im like, “Okay, I think I really want to do that”.

She told Spin in an interview that her electro-pop mixtape digs into the complexities of relationships with her friends and lovers, as well as thoughts and feelings about my mental state and what life is supposed to be as an artist, my depression, and my insecurities.
