Holby City review with spoilers: Does Ric have dementia?

Tired and under stress – but is that all? (Picture: BBC)

In tonights Holby City we discovered what Ric Griffin (Hugh Quarshie) believes to be his problem. Hes worried that he might have dementia. Like Duffy in Casualty, he was looking up the symptoms on the internet, and because Duffys fears turned out to be real, it makes me think that Ric probably doesnt have dementia at all. But theres no doubt that theres something wrong with him. Hes been making mistakes, confusing peoples names, forgetting the password to his computer and flying into rages at fairly minor things – and Lofty (Lee Mead), who is not a minor thing at all.

Its true hes under stress – Serena is away and so is Hanssen and also apparently anyone who could make the decision to redeploy one of the many doctors who lurk up on Darwin every week. He was under very specific pressure this week as his patient o the week was Mi Hi Tan (Hayley Lam), one of the conjoined twins he helped to separate in ground-breaking surgery in some memorable Holby episodes in 2008. Ric feels a moral responsibility for all his cases, but theres a special place in his heart for the Tan family, who revere him so much they have a picture of him on their wall at home. It was also his 65th birthday, so there was a lot going on.

I hope whatever it is thats wrong with Ric, one day hell be able to look back and see how much help and support hes been getting from Zav (Marcus Griffiths), who knows somethings wrong and, until he can get Ric to admit it, has been watching out for him and particularly for his patients.

While Zav was watching out for Ric, Fletch (Alex Walkinshaw) was looking out for Chloe (Amy Lennox) and Ange (Dawn Steele) – though it seemed for a very worrying while that hed been taken in by Evil Evan (Jack Ryder)s wheedling ways. When Evan showed up at Holby, Fletch told Chloe hed sent him packing, but then we saw Fletch and Evan enjoying a cosy drink and a bitch about the Godard women in Albies. What was Fletch playing at? Surely the King of Nurses couldnt so easily be taken in? Well no, of course, he couldnt. After accidentally spilling a drink over Evan he took the opportunity (while Evan was away cleaning himself up) to have a look on his phone. Nobody on Holby ever bothers password-protecting their phone, so he very soon found the camera app and was able to see Chloe at home doing a bit of yoga. Thank heavens thats all she was doing.

A swift phone call to Ange sent her to Chloes flat, where they found the camera. Ange and Chloe turned up at Albies so Chloe could call Evan a pathetic creep, then the police arrived. Hopefully, this is the end of Evil Evans reign of terror, and Ange thanked Fletch for his excellent efforts with a kiss – so Chloe is safe and Flange are back on again.
