After it was revealed Spider-Man would be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe after negotiations between Marvel Studios and Sony fell flat, directing duo Anthony and Joe Russo have revealed theyre not at all surprised.
In fact, they sort of saw it coming, after being there for the battle to get Spider-Man in their films at all.
The duo, who directed Captain America: The Winter Solider, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame for the film company revealed their thoughts at Spideys departure.
While it might have upset the fans, who called for a boycott of films amid the turmoil, Anthony explained: I think thats why Joe and I are not so devastated or surprised that theres been a falling-out, because it was so hard to make it happen in the first place.

Speaking to Daily Beast, Joe added seeing how difficult it was to initially reach a compromise, he half-expected Spider-Man – played by Tom Holland – would be leaving the Marvel Cinematic Universe anyway.
He shared: It wasnt easy. Kevin [Feige] went through a lot.
There were a lot of ups and downs, and he kept walking into our office and wed go, “Look, weve got to do it with [Sony],” and hed go, “OK, Ill figure it out,” and walk back into his.
He was looking for the way out. He wanted to open that door and have us go, “We figured it out! We dont need Spider-Man!” because its a lot of work to get two major corporations to play nice with each other, and the fact that it happened at all, we should all be dancing and celebrating that we got that little bit of time.
It comes after Sony Pictures chairman Tony Vinciquerra claimed that for the moment the door is closed on Spidey returning to the MCU.
Tony told Variety there is no ill will between Sony and Marvel – after the two failed to reach a financing agreement on the two Spider-Man movies reportedly in the works.

The feud has effectively pushed current Spider-Man Tom out of any future web-slinging movies and left fans utterly distraught. Tony acknowledged the fan backlash, admitting its been an interesting couple of weeks for the studio.
