Radio DJs Yinka and Shayna Marie dont want their race to become the focus of their brand new breakfast show.
Yinka and Shayna Marie will take to the airwaves bright and early on Monday morning, easing Capital Xtra listeners into their day.
Its rare that two women will front a prime time breakfast show on the radio, let alone two black women.
And while Yinka and Shayna Marie are well aware of that fact, it wont be front and centre when their show kicks off on Monday.
Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Yinka said: I think thats our story. Im a woman of colour, Shaynas a woman of colour.
But thats not the star of the show. For me thats not the thing Im focusing on, simply because I want to be a good broadcaster.
I want us to do well. I want to make sure that we are playing the sickest music, I want to make sure that we are bringing the vibes. Being two women of colour doing that just adds more to our story.
Shayna added: Thats just what we are. Weve been doing this, its already our truth. Its not like a focus point or a thing in the back of our minds. Its just, oh were just black women.
However Yinka admits they fully appreciate the significance of it.
Its so weird to think that you might be a cheeky little role model, she joked.
The pair, who get along famously on and off-air, already laid down their pilot show a year ago. And while they are used to getting up early (they previously fronted a show that kicked off at 9am), speaking to the nation at 6.30am is a big change.
How are they going to handle an evern earlier start to their day?
Weve done breakfast before, we know what it is. Were morning people, Shayna said.
Yinka explained: Once Im up Im up. And its the biggest show, and its such a privilege that being here at 6.30 doesnt feel like a chore. Im at my best in the morning.
Catch Yinka and Shayna Marie on Capital Xtra from 6.30am on 9 September.
