The first trailer for Little Women dropped yesterday, sending us all into complete meltdown as we got our first glimpse of Meryl Streep, Laura Dern, Emma Watson and co. in action in the adaptation of the classic novel.

But, while fans were excited by the prospect of seeing the gang on the big screen, director Greta Gerwig revealed it is Timothee Chalamet and Saoirse Ronan everyone needs to keep an eye on.

In fact, she branded the pair, who play Jo and Laurie, a bonfire of chemistry – and we are already living for it.

There is some true pairing between them that feels like whats in the tradition of great cinematic pairings, she said. They have an energy between them that is like they become a bonfire when theyre together. Theyre both so alive and theyre both so talented and so smart and so young. When you put them together its like combustion.

[Watching them] breaks my heart, every time. They are both wonderful dancers. I think of them as my children, I just adore them. They are spectacular actors. I dont know how they do it, I mean its magic. I direct them, but its all there.

This isnt the first time the pair have appeared on the big screen together, starring opposite one another in Lady Bird back in 2018 – which Greta was also at the helm of.

So she definitely knows what shes talking about.

As well as Saiorothee, the director also praised Emma Watson, who plays Meg March in the upcoming film.

To me she embodies everything that I was interested in, in terms of who the March women were. She is lovely, she is way out there trying to do everything she can [with her activism], she added to People Magazine and Entertainment Weekly.

And I think, in terms of what she did with the character of Meg, she has so much open-heartedness and so much love combined with that much intelligence, its heartbreaking and potent.

The story is set in the civil war era, and follows sisters Meg, Beth, Jo and Amy as they grow up together in an all-female household.

Little Women has been adapted for the screen in the past, with Katharine Hepburn starring in one of the first recreations of the book back in 1933.
