Ashes washout: Lord’s match now a four-day Test after wet opening

London: The second match of the series between Australia and England is now a four-day Test after the first full washout in an Ashes contest in a decade.

The first day of the Lords Test was abandoned on Wednesday afternoon due to persistent rain, and with further wet weather forecast for later in the match there is an increasing likelihood of no result.

The outlook is more encouraging for Thursday, however, and when the Test eventually gets under way there will be 98 overs of play for each of the final four days. If further time is lost to the weather an extra 30 minutes can be added each day.

During a brief period when the rain subsided, Englands debutant fast bowler Jofra Archer was presented with his Test cap by former England bowler, fellow Sussex player and close friend Chris Jordan. While that confirmed Archers inclusion, as expected, the showers did not hold off long enough for the Australia and England teams to be named or for the toss of the coin to be held.
