Melissa McCarthy has called on movie-goers to watch more than male caped movies as it is revealed that Hollywood is wary of female-fronted films after a strong of box office disappointments.

Oscar-nominated actress Melissa has suggested that there is a weird epidemic where people say they are for films written and directed by women but then never out their money where their mouth is.

Her quotes come as director Andrea Berloff has claimed that a president of a movie studio told her that “because Movie X and Movie Y did not work this summer, were done with women-fronted movies”.

Berloff is the director of Melissas new film The Kitchen which also stars Elisabeth Moss and Tiffany Haddish.

The three star as crime wives in the 1970s who are thrown together to run Hells Kitchen after their husbands land in jail.

Speaking to USA Today, Berloff said: If these movies consistently dont do well theres not going to be more in a few years.

If people want to see more of these movies, they have to go out and buy a ticket.

The Handmaids Tale star Elisabeth added: Whats obviously so insane about that are the 150 movies starring men that didnt do well either.

Its an unintelligent thing to say.

The top ten movies of the year so far globally have all been directed by men Captain Marvel was directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck) while 8 out of the ten were, by and large, focused on male characters.

Captain Marvel and Alita: Battle Angel both had female leads.

Us and X-Men: Dark Phoenix were both in the top 20 and had female leads in Lupita Nyongo and Sophie Turner respectively.
