Baroka grab away win against Wits

Cape Town – Baroka overcame the odds as they defeated Wits 1-0 on Tuesday evening in an Absa Premiership encounter away from home.

The Students were unchanged from their decisive victory over AmaZulu, while Bakgaga brought three new faces in the team following their draw with lively Cape Town City on the opening weekend, as Khulekani Madondo, Sbonelo Ngubane and Liberia international Terrence Tisdell started.

After a slow start to the encounter, the hosts picked up momentum after the 20 minute-mark, with the likes of Sameehg Doutie and Keegan Ritchie threatening with balls into the area but Wedson Nyirenda's men held strong at the back.

The away side's first threat came on the 30-minute mark, with Tshidiso Patjie curling a left-footed and swerving strike from edge of the box that went over the bar.

With the match in desperate need of some action, there was drama with five minutes remaining of the first stanza after a handball just inside the Clever Boys box was deemed to be just outside, on the edge of the 18-yard area. With that said, Gerald Phiri Junior made full use of the chance, as he curled a fine dead-ball past goalkeeper Brandon Petersen in the Wits goal.
