As we continue to wrap our heads around the finale of Avengers: Endgame, the theories are coming through thick and fast.

From Iron Mans Infinity Gauntlet to Doctor Stranges prophesy in the final battle, were keen to dissect everything that went down to make sense of the saga were leaving behind.

However now some fans have put into action the idea Stan Lee, who is behind most of the characters we simply adore, was meant to play the biggest role of all (pretty much) in the latest Avengers flick, Endgame.

Basically, as the Avengers defeat Thanos and strive to return all the Infinity Stones to their OG places of rest as to not disturb the world (again), Steve Rogers AKA Captain America (Chris Evans) volunteers that act.

Of course what he was planning to do all along was return to the point in time when he was with Peggy (Hayley Atwell), and live out his life with his one true love.

We were soon to discover this when Cap returned to the Avengers present day at the end of the film to hand over his famous shield to Sam who is set to take on the mighty task of his, presenting as a v v v old man.

Now one fan has come up with the sort of believable notion Stan – who filmed cameos for all the Marvel flicks – was meant to appear as old man Rogers.

An ambitious thought, non?

Reddit user u/MemTheDurgen suggested that while Steve was keen to live his life with Peggy, perhaps he couldnt resist checking in on how things were going – seeing as he was formerly the protector of the planet, essentially. And this is where Stan came in.

…Which old man has been in the background of every Marvel movie ever made, keeping to himself? Stan Lee, the theorist continued.

It may not have been from the beginning, but somewhere along the way Marvel planned to have Captain America go back in time for his happy ending and be played by Stan Lee in all of the movies, finally revealing himself in Endgame.

However, while Cap had all the Stones in his possession, this film fan was right in pointing out Professor Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) had previously mentioned time travel just doesnt work like that in the Marvel universe – you cant change the future by messing with the past.

With directors Anthony and Joe Russo confirming Steve lived his life on an alternate timeline – this fan believes perhaps the alternate universe theyre referring to is actually the MCU. Its a little mind-boggling, lets be honest.

On a roll, though, the theorist then pointed out a bunch of cameos made by Stan in previous films that seemingly backed up his idea, such as in Captain America: First Avenger: This cameo would have been Steve later on wanting to visit himself in the past, perhaps for nostalgia, when he sees who he thinks is Captain America he says “I thought hed be taller” because he thinks hes looking at a younger him.
