Trophies, not family convinced Ryan McGowan to sign for Sydney FC

Within 24 hours of his brother Dylan signing for Western Sydney Wanderers, defender Ryan McGowan penned a two-year deal with their rivals Sydney FC but the Socceroo says joining his brother wasn't the only reason for his long-awaited move to the A-League.

The McGowan brothers are close-knit. Dylan followed Ryan to Scottish club Hearts as a teenager and almost every one of their 17 collective transfers since have been made after heavy consultation with each other. It was their most recent that left them stunned however, when Ryan called Dylan to tell him of Sydney FC's offer only to learn his younger brother was already set to become his new neighbour.

"It was pretty much the same day. I called Dylan and told him guess who just called me and he said thats interesting, guess who called me? I am not sure if the two clubs flipped a coin for which brother," he said. "It made sense but we had to make decisions for ourselves. I didnt come here because Dylan came to the Wanderers, it was just the best options we had for ourselves. It was a good thing to get the deal that we both wanted. Once everything was signed, the banter started flying."

Unsurprisingly, they were ecstatic to learn of the interest that would reunite them back in Australia but Sydney's defender says that wasn't the reason he returned home. After being released from English club Bradford after his loan spell at Dundee, McGowan had no shortage of offers to continue playing in the UK.

"Because I played most of my career in the UK, that seems to be where I get a lot of interest. Thats where my reputation is at its biggest," he said.

Some were perhaps more lucrative than what was on offer in the A-League but he didnt' believe those options would provide him with what he yearns most for in the latter years of his career: trophies.
