A recluse who vanished without trace in April was entirely consumed by his 16 pet dogs, police say.

Freddie Mack May, 57, last chatted to a relative on April 19.

He had begun to contact family more in the months leading up to his death, causing them to worry about his safety when he suddenly fell silent.

Freddie suffered from numerous underlying medical conditions. Sheriff's deputies say they will never be able to confirm whether he died of natural causes and was eaten, or if he was attacked and killed by the dogs
