Spider-Man: Far From Home has topped a box office record previously held by Avengers: Endgame.

The film – a sequel to Tom Hollands first Spidey film, Homecoming – grossed $27 million (£21.6 million) a the Norht America box office on Wednesday, making it the Marvel Cinematic Universe film with the highest midweek takings ever.

Not bad for a teenager from Queens.

Endgame previously held the record, taking in $25.3 million (£20.2 million) on its first Wednesday in cinemas back in April.

Far From Home has also performed well globally, topping the $310 million at the worldwide box office thanks to China, where it has a total so far of $136.8 million in China, and$91 million in its first three days in the US.

In the UK the film has taken home $7.2 million since release on 2 July.

The ghost of Iron Man hangs over the Spider-Man sequel heavily, with Robert Downey Jrs late hero basically another character in the film.

But thankfully, theres enough action and high school hijinks to ensure that Far From Home isnt just an ode to Stark – despite it starting off with a hilariously 90s star-wipe tribute to the fallen Avengers (picture watermarks and Whitney Houston included).

More: Film

Metro.co.uk gave the film three and a half stars, writing: While this is definitely a Spider-Man film, not an Avengers one, there are a few too many “who will be the next Tony Stark?” mentions, with the message of the film being clumsily hammered home at any given opportunity.

But on balance, Holland manages to pull it back and keep Far From Home in the charming zone, rather than the saccharine. Is it better than Homecoming? Perhaps not, but its enough to keep us wanting more of Peters high school adventures.
