Janet Weiss has announced she is leaving Sleater-Kinney after 23 years.

The drummer announced the news on social media today with a hand-signed note.

The 53-year-old wrote: After intense deliberation and with heavy sadness, I have decided to leave Sleater-Kinney. The band is heading in a new direction and it is time for me to move on.

I will never forget the heights we reached or the magnificent times Corin, Carrie and I shared. We were a force of nature.

To the dearest SK fans – youre the raddest fans in the universe and I love you. Experiencing the music together has been the honour of a lifetime. Thank you for sustaining with me the past 24 years and for proving without a doubt that love and connection are what saves us.

She signed the note from The Drummer, Janet.

Weiss replacement has not yet been announced.

Sleater-Kinney was formed by Tucker and Brownstein in 1994, with Weiss joining the group in 1996 – she was the fourth drummer after Laura Macfarlane, Toni Gogin and Misty Farrell.

Brownstein has described Weiss as certainly the most musically gifted member of the band, the one with the largest musical lexicon and sphere from which to draw influence and reference.
