18-year-old Nyngan man steals firearms, appears before local court

A 18-year-old man pleaded guilty to illegally stealing and selling eight firearms when he appeared before Nyngan Local Court on Monday. Between May 26 and June 9, Nyngan resident Westley Carter tried to find the keys to a safe secured at a Bogan Street address, a police facts document presented in court stated. Once he found the key, police said Mr Carter stole two single barrel shotguns, three double barrel shotguns, one Stirling rifle and two Lithgow rifles. He sold them for financial gain, to another person who was not authorised to purchase the firearms. On June 9 the owner of the firearms could not locate the safe keys so he confronted Mr Carter, who was known to the man. He later returned the safe keys to the owner, who then drove Mr Carter to Nyngan Police Station where he was arrested for stealing and selling the firearms. Mr Carter participated in an electronically recorded interview where he admitted to stealing and selling the firearms for financial gain. Police said Mr Carter declined to help them ensure the firearms were safety returned. Mr Carter has never held a firearms licence in any Australian state or territory, police believed. In court on Monday Magistrate Gary Wilson ordered a sentencing assessment report be developed by Community Corrections. Mr Carter will be sentenced on July 22 in Nyngan Local Court.
