Danny Boyle would feel like an imposter if he made a female-led film
Danny Boyle has been behind some of the biggest films of the nineties and noughties, from Trainspotting and The Beach to 28 Days Later and Slumdog Millionaire – but theyre not exactly teeming with female screentime.
And it doesnt look like that will change anytime soon.
The director has claimed that putting an actress as a lead in one of his movies would make him feel like an impostor. You know, because hes a man.
Although his back catalogue features stars including Tilda Swinton, Freida Pinto, Naomie Harris, Lily James and Kelly Macdonald, of all of Boyles films, only 2013s Trance features an actress in a main role – Rosario Dawson, who received equal billing with James McAvoy and Vincent Cassel.
When this was pointed out in an interview with The Independent, the 62-year-old said: You feel a bit… you obviously have a concern, especially now – and its a growing concern – where you dont want to [make a female-led film as a male director], because youd feel like an imposter. I certainly respond to that.
He added: My favourite shows at the moment are Fleabag and Gentlemen Jack. If Suranne Jones doesnt win every f***ing prize for Gentlemen Jack, I dont know whats going on.

Boyle said he only gets pressure from his daughters to make a female-led film, but conceded: Im planning another film at the moment, which is about two men and theyre the only people in the movie. I know, I know, Im getting further and further away from it.
The director, who is currently on the promo trail for his movie Yesterday, wouldnt have brought a female 007 in, either, had he stayed on directing Bond 25.
Boyle was announced last March as the director of Daniel Craigs presumed final outing as James Bond.
However, just months later, it was confirmed he had left the project due to creative differences, to be replaced by Cary Fukunaga.
Boyle told Empire that his departure was down to his loyalty to writing partner John Hodges, saying: I learned quite a lot about myself with Bond, I work in partnership with writers and I am not prepared to break it up.

We were working very, very well, but they didnt go down that route with us, so we decided to part company and it would be unfair to say what it was because I dont know what Cary is going to do.
