Toy Story 4 director has recalled seeing Tom Hanks first reaction to the new completed film, describing how he felt numb.

The Disney Pixar sequel has the enormous task of following the emotionally devastating and beloved Toy Story 3, which was originally believed to be the end of the franchise.

A large chunk of the pressure falls to director Josh Cooley who, while having directed short Pixar film Rileys First Date? and helped write Inside Out, hasnt directed a feature film for the studio.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk at the premiere for Toy Story 4, Cooley explained how Tom Hanks, who voices Woody, hadnt seen the film prior to the US premiere on Tuesday 11 June.

Recently we had the US premiere and I had Tom [Hanks] sitting right in front of me the entire time, and he hadnt seen the movie yet, Cooley said.

When it was over, he turned around and had a huge smile, and shook my hand. I was so numb. I cant quite remember what he said, but it was positive.

Asked if it was daunting being given the keys to the Toy Story franchise, Cooley said: It was pretty daunting. Its like, “Heres a brand new Lamborghini. Go as fast as you can and dont scratch it.” And Im like, “I dont have a licence!”

But I had a great cast and a great crew that helped me steer that Lamborghini straight back home.

Along with returning cast members Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, Toy Story 4 brings in fresh faces Keanu Reeves as Duke Caboom, Christina Hendricks as Gabby Gabby, and Tony Hale as Forky.
