Long road to ton as big Swan Sinclair targets improvement on ‘patchy’ form

Sydney ruckman Callum Sinclair concedes his form this season has been "patchy" after a career-best campaign last year.

Season 2019 has been trying for both player and club but Sinclair, on the eve of his 100th senior game, believes the win before the bye over West Coast can be a driver for both leading into the run home.

Sinclair was named the Swans' most improved player last year, securing a top-10 finish in the club's best and fairest voting after playing a lone hand in the ruck in the absence of Kurt Tippett and Sam Naismith.

The big man has again shouldered the ruck burden but his output has been down in key areas like contested marks, goals and possessions.

Sinclair, however, played one of his best games of the season against the Eagles with his marking and tap work a key in the victory.

"I've probably been a little bit patchy from time to time," Sinclair said of his form this year. "I'd like to think I made some improvements and got some energy back into my game a bit. Every week there's a handful of things I work on, like every other player."

It has been a long road to the ton for Sinclair, who cut his teeth in Victoria's Amateurs competition, the VFL and the WAFL before being belatedly picked up by West Coast in a rookie draft.

While playing in the WAFL, Sinclair applied for full-time jobs outside of football.

"I had a handful of job interviews, but lucky enough I was drafted so I didn't go down that path," Sinclair said.

He crossed to Sydney at the end of 2015 in a direct trade for Lewis Jetta. Though the Swans would dearly love a player with Jetta's precise kicking and speed, Sinclair has played an important role in the ruck for them.
