Hayes looks for quick rise through the grades with flying Tony Nicconi
David Hayes knows one thing for sure about his group 3 winner Tony Nicconi: “He is fast”.
The Vain Stakes winner returns a gelding at Rosehill on Saturday with a couple of benchmark races as targets to ready him for black-type sprints in the spring.
“He gets to come back and race for BOBS bonuses in the next month and get his rating to a point where he will be getting into the better sprints in the spring,” Hayes said.
“He is a gelding now and we want to make sure he has the rating to get into the races we think he is up too. There is good money available for him at this time of the year, so we are taking advantage of it as we go through the grades.

“I would think in the spring he will be racing in some of the bigger sprints.”
He has the speed to get across from out there, and it is going to take a good horse to run him down.

Tony Nicconi has been in the Lindsay Parks Randwick stable for this preparation and has been impressive in two barrier trials. He ran the best of the morning untouched at Randwick on May 31 and repeated the dose on a wearing track at Rosehill a week later.
He has been made a $6.50 second pick behind Sylvias Mother, which is also resuming from a spell and has been heavily backed into $1.90 favourite.
Tony Nicconi will have to overcome an outside draw but Hayes believes that is where his greatest asset will be handy.
