International Rules still on agenda, for 2020

International Rules, the competition not seen since Australia played Ireland in two tests in 2017, won't happen until 2020 at the earliest after the GAA and the AFL shut the door this week on the slim prospect that it would be played at the end of 2019.

The two bodies discussed the prospect last November of Australia resuming the series in Ireland, and potentially America, at the end of this season but time moved too quickly to put a plan in place.

The GAA confirmed on Tuesday in a statement to RTE Ireland that it was now too late for tests to be played in 2019 but said they still held high hopes for the series resuming in 2020.

An AFL spokesperson said there remained "an appetite" within the AFL for International Rules being played in 2020 and discussions would resume as soon as practical for both bodies.

The AFL last played an International Rules test in Ireland in 2015 visiting New York on the way to both train and make the November trip an attractive option for the AFL's best players.

The prospect of playing a test in America was then flagged but planning stalled when the AFL was unable to find a suitable venue in the USA.
