Almost one-in-10 voters in the Parkes electorate chose not to vote for a candidate in the federal polls. Regardless, Mark Coulton has been formally declared as the Federal Member for Parkes by the Divisional Returning Officer Erin Eames. He received 67 per cent of the two candidate preferred votes and 51 per cent of the primary count. There was a 7.89 per cent swing against Mr Coulton in the primary vote. ALSO MAKING NEWS: Labor candidate Jack Ayoub received 24 per cent of the first preference votes, followed by Liberal Democrats' Daniel Jones with eight per cent and Independent Will Landers with seven per cent. The United Australia Party candidate Petrus Van Der Steen had six per cent of the first preference votes and Independent David Paull had four per cent. Of the 109,639 eligible voters in the Parkes electorate, 91.03 per cent voted. Of those, 5.86 per cent of votes were informal, meaning the ballot paper was left blank or declared ineligible. In the senate, 40 per cent of the vote went to the Liberal/Nationals, the equivalent of 32,700 votes. Labor/Country Labor received 20 per cent, while the Shooters, Fishers and Farmers finished with 10 per cent, just in front of Pauline Hanson's One Nation. The Help End Marijuana Prohibition (HEMP) Party performed the best of the lesser-known groups with 2.64 per cent of the votes. The Socialist Equality Party has the smallest number of votes at 30, equating to 0.03 per cent overall. In a statement read at the declaration of the polls, Mr Coulton said it was a privilege to be re-elected. "Representing the people and communities that reside in half of NSW is by no means a small feat, and it is a role I have taken with utmost humility for the past 11 or so years," he said. "Every one of my constituents deserves to be heard and it's a great privilege to listen and represent the issues that matter most to you, in the Australian Parliament."
