Liam Gallagher fans will see his sensitive side like never before in the new documentary, As It Was, which features the Oasis singer visiting the childhood bedroom he once shared with his estranged brother Noel Gallagher.

The Wonderwall singer has opened the doors to the past 10 years of his life and career, picking up right after Oasis split in the midst of their tour in 2009.

Oasis devastating separation was the culmination of Liam and Noels long-running, bitter and very public feud that has shown no signs of letting up.

British filmmaker Charlie Lightning has been on the journey with Liam, documenting all those behind-the-scenes moments which hes put together for a no-holds-barred look into one of rocks most fascinating characters.

But few scenes in the documentary moved Charlie more than when Liam, 46, unexpectedly invited him into the family home where his beloved mother, Peggy Gallagher, still lives.

Speaking to Metro.co.uk, Charlie said: Its my journey with them and thats quite unique to be there filming stuff the whole time.

I had been there throughout the whole of that tour and you saw the divide that was going on between them. But we never thought that three shows after the last one it would end.

He added: Youre making a film about [Liam Gallagher] you cant not talk about or approach the issue [of his feud with Noel] – its not like he shies away from it.

Charlie was taken aback that Liam so openly invited him into one of his most special spaces – his childhood home.

But not only was Charlie welcomed in with open arms, Liam personally made him a cuppa too.

The director recalled: Were in the house, hes making me a cuppa tea and his mums there, its all very homely.

He takes me upstairs and on the door theres a plaque that says “Liam and Noels room” and its the room they shared.

He takes me into the room and talks about how his bed was there and Noels bed was there… putting my fan hat on, it was amazing to be in that room and hearing him talking about their stories.

While there are inevitably references to Noel in As It Was, Charlie is clear that this is not an Oasis movie or an opportunity for Liam to bash Noel.

He explained: I didnt know that hed actually let us in and take us into that room. I didnt want to Noel-bash or sensationalise, I just wanted to tell it as it is.

Perhaps Charlies only frustration with Noel is that the High Flying Birds frontman refused to allow Oasis music to be featured in As It Was.

We wanted to use [Liam] singing Live Forever at the [One Love Manchester] concert and Noel wouldnt let us do it, the director revealed.

But he wonders: Maybe if I got to use more Oasis music it wouldnt have been so filmque.

When its not broaching the subject of Liams sibling rivalry, As It Was presents the rocker as vulnerable and human more so than ever before.

Charlie said of his vision for the documentary: Its about Liam and his journey. Its a lot more personal and a lot more like a human story…
