The NSW town of Walgett has not only been battling the prolonged drought, but is now battling to find the basic supply of food necessities after the town's only supermarket went up in flames. Emergency services were called to the Walgett IGA supermarket on Fox Street at about 8.40am on June 5, after reports of a fire. It's the second time the building has been damaged by fire after it was destroyed in 2013. Western NSW Minister Adam Marshall has expressed his sadness for Wednesday's fire and promised emergency food supplies to Walgett were being considered. Mr Marshall told Parliament on Wednesday: "I was saddened to learn of news that at approximately 8.30am this morning flames engulfed Walgett IGA Supermarket, with the building sustaining significant damage. "Walgett IGA is the only supermarket in town and the closest alternative is 80km away," he said. "The township of Walgett is already on its knees battling the crippling effects of drought. This could not come at a worse time and is devastating news for the many locals that rely on the supermarket to purchase their groceries and meet their most basic needs. "I raised this sad development in NSW Parliament today and want to reiterate that my heart goes out to the people of Walgett who have been impacted by this incident. "I am informed that the matter is still under investigation by NSW Fire & Rescue. "As the Minister for Western NSW I have requested the Department of Premier and Cabinet to look into the issue as a matter of urgency and report back on how the NSW Government may be able to assist the township in its recovery. I have also discussed this incident with the local MP Roy Butler and will be working closely with him going forward." The Walgett Shire Council said plans are underway to ensure the supply of basic food and necessities to community members. "Following a Local Emergency Committee planning meeting this afternoon, a working party has established the possibility of temporary grocery store site which we hoped to be confirmed in the coming days," the statement said. "Other foods outlets Walgett Newsagency, Inland Petroleum, Woodhams Petroleum and Café 64, have all arranged for additional supply of milk and bread and other basic essentials. "The Walgett pharmacy is also making arrangements for the additional infant supplies (baby formula, food and nappies). "Free bottled water will be available from Walgett Aboriginal Medical Service on Thursday and Friday between the hours of 9am – 12pm." The Walgett Shire Council have also arranged a free bus service to Coonamble on Saturday, June 8 to allow community members without transport to purchase essential household items from the neighbouring IGA. "The fire ground remains in the control of the Senior Fire Officer and the police are maintaining an incident command post and an inner and outer perimeter. "Enquiries to date indicate that no person has been injured as a result of the fire with all persons accounted for. "It is anticipated that Fox Street will remain closed in this vicinity until at least Saturday afternoon. The council have said store owners have reaffirmed their commitment to rebuilding the store in Walgett. READ ALSO:
