Three firefighters at Nyngan have thrown their support behind a test of endurance to raise vital funds to tackle a devastating disease. Deputy Captain Adam Bourke and retained firefighters Jordan Lane and Aaron Bennett are in training for the 2019 Firefighters Climb for Motor Neurone Disease (MND). The men will join hundreds of firies to climb the 1504 steps of the Sydney Tower Eye raising money and awareness for MND research on November 9. READ ALSO: As they climb the 98 storeys, they'll be dressed in full structural gear that has a combined weight of 20 kilos. Deputy Captain Bourke said while it's going to be a challenge, it's all for a good cause. "It's more of a personal thing to work towards, but a lot of people can get the disease without even knowing and there's obviously no cure for it at this stage," he said. "There have been a few locals who have had it, and everyone knows someone who's got it. "So the more money we can raise, the more of a chance they might be able to find a cure and help someone." Training for the climb has begun for the team, and you may see them climbing the grandstands at Larkin Oval. "We've got six months to train, and we'll need it," Deputy Captain Bourke said. "They say the best way to train is to get dressed and walk up and down grandstands and get on the pushbike." "[The full structural gear] is going to be pretty heavy, but the worst part about it is you sweat in the middle of winter, so November's going to be pretty hot on the climb. "We'll just have to do a bit more than running." While the firies have each set a fundraising target of $1500 they are hoping the community will dig deep to help them raise "as much as they can". "Every cent counts," Deputy Captain Bourke said. The firefighters say they are "excited" for the challenge, and will be holding fundraisers in the coming months raise money for the Macquarie University Centre for MND research. "You have a little bit of nerves, but we're excited to do it because it's going towards a good cause," the Deputy Captain said.
