Birthday spoils for Bulloch at Gas Point
The State Bodyboarding Titles were held last weekend in thick, heavy waves at Gas Point in Margaret River. The local riders used their reef break knowledge in the super hollow barrels to snatch victory in all divisions. The solid 2.5 metre swells rolled along the coast and created the best possible conditions with clean offshore winds for all riders to enjoy. Margaret River's Ben Veitch was right at home in the big waves taking home the win in the blue-ribbon Open Men's division. Threading multiple deep tubes and punching strong rolls through the lip, Veitch amassed a combined total of 16.00 from a possible 20. Veitch picked off the biggest and best waves in the final, linking strong manoeuvres and earning brilliant scores to hold off metro riders Kai De Legh (Scarborough), Joel Hughan (Trigg) and Brendan Gabel (Scarborough) to claim the 2019 Open Men's State Title. "I'm stoked to be the State Champion once again," Veitch said. "Well done to all the groms giving it a crack out there today, the waves were heavy." Margaret River's Ziggy Bulloch proved he's one of WA's brightest young bodyboarding stars, scooping up two State Titles in the Under-16 Cadet Boy's and Under-18 Junior Boy's divisions. Bulloch celebrated his 14th birthday in style, flaunting his knowledge of the Gas reef, powering through some incredible tubes and wowing the judges with his style and finesse. Pushed all the way by close friend Max McGregor (Margaret River), Bulloch will spearhead the WA Bodyboard Team who will head to National Titles in NSW in August. "I'm exhausted, I surfed a lot of heats today, 7 or 8 maybe? But it was a good way to spend my birthday down here at the beach," Bulloch said. Kai De Legh claimed the 'Air of the Day' for the best tube ride of the day, which earned him the highest score of 9.50 while Veitch was awarded the Air Asia 'Big Air' for a massive, power roll. Forecast: A large three metre plus swell on Thursday with semi clean SSE winds. Friday will have cleaner SE winds and a smaller 2.8m swell. Saturday looks fun early with a 1.6m swell and NE winds while Sunday turns NW so there might be some wind waves.
