Smith under knife in latest setback for struggling Swans

Sydneys wretched season has taken another turn for the worse with backline stalwart Nick Smith in danger of missing the rest of the year after undergoing further surgery on his injured hamstring.

The veteran defender went under the knife on Tuesday in a bid to repair damage to a hamstring tendon he sustained in round 21 last year. He has not played since.

The Swans had planned to have Smith, 30, return to football early last month but he could not handle the lift in training required.

“Nick worked hard to get his injury right over summer and earlier this year but unfortunately hasn't been able to get back to full training," Swans football manager Charlie Gardiner said.

"A decision was made earlier this week to undergo some more surgery on that hamstring to try and relieve some of the scar tissue around that hamstring.

"Hopefully that surgery will put his issues behind him and we can see him back on the park soon."
