Town’s youth to uphold Show tradition

Sophie Menzies will represent Nyngan, after being named the 2019 Showgirl. Members of the community gathered at the RSL for the Show Society's annual Showgirl dinner on Saturday. In the Junior category Lily Meldrum was named 2019 Junior Showgirl, with Ebony Martin awarded runner-up. Ms Menzies, who is currently studying veterinary science at university was the only contestant in this year's competition. However, previous Showgirl for 2018 Rebecca George said Ms Menzies would do well. "I've been really proud to represent Nyngan for the past 12 months and I'm really happy I can pass over those reigns to someone who I think is just as capable and is willing to do the things and go the distance I have as well," Ms George said. "I had a really great year … I've loved every minute of it, getting involved in the community more and especially involved the show society this year," she said. "I think if we don't involve younger generations we're going to lose our shows, and if we lose our shows it's going to be extremely hard to bring them back. "Our show society holds our show on a Sunday and Monday and there aren't many show societies in rural NSW that have this anymore. "I think that's something that's really special and a testament to our show society and our town, for backing our show each year, especially this year when it's been really dry and there have been other communities such as Bourke and Cobar who have had to cancel their show due to conditions. "We're really lucky our council's backed us and our Show Society has pushed quite hard to keep running those events we try and run each year." For Ms George, the show is a space to educate people about the broader aspects of farming communities, and the Showgirl competition is a big part of that education. "It's not what you think it is, Showgirl is a massive opportunity to network with people outside our own community, and there's so many like minded girls state wide … who have a true passion for Agriculture and women in rural areas," she said. Ms George acknowledged former president Chris Elder, who passed away earlier this year, and said the current committee have stepped up to continue his passion. "This year especially has been a tough year losing Chris," she said. "[The committee] want to do him proud this year, and in the years going forward because he worked so hard for certain things and they want to keep what he wanted alive, especially the Showgirl competition."
