Notre Dames 200,000 bees kept on roof survived devastating fire

Notre Dames bees are still buzzing around outside.

It was feared the hives had been engulfed in the fire that devastated the iconic building in Paris on Monday.

But beekeeper Nicolas Geant has now confirmed they survived.

He said: The bees are alive. Until this morning, I had had no news.

At first I thought that the three hives had burned but I had no information

Then I saw from satellite images that this was not the case and then the cathedral spokesman told me that they were going in and out of the hives.

City bees, said Geant, nowadays produce four to five times more honey than their country cousins. The Opera Garnier also has hives on the roof and the honey, produced from various flowers in the capital is highly regarded. The Eiffel Tower is pictured at left. Mr Geant, who looks after the hives which are kept on top of a sacristry that adjoins the cathedral, had feared the worst after hearing about the fire.

He had received calls of support from people around the world who were concerned for the bees.

Mr Geant said the species of bee at Notre Dame was loyal and would never have abandoned the hive or queen.
