Its been a big week in the k-pop world: from BTS new album launch to BLACKPINKs earth-shattering Coachella performance.

The first ever performance by a k-pop girl group has attracted the attention – and doting eyes – of everyone, everywhere, with fans including Ariana Grande.

So who are they and whats the meaning behind their name? Read on to find out all you need to know.

What does BLACKPINK mean?

Youd be forgiven for thinking the band name is just the words of two colours sandwiched together, but youd be wrong. Kind of.

When the band were formed back in 2016 by YG Entertainment, a rep for the label explained the rationale behind the band name.

They said: The meaning of Black Pink aims to contradict the common perception of the color pink. Pink is commonly used to portray prettiness, but Black Pink actually means to say that Pretty isnt everything. It also symbolizes that they are a team that encompasses not only beauty, but also great talent.
