It’s been 785 days without a derby win, but there’s hope for Wanderers

The bad news first. Western Sydney's derby drought will roll on into another season.

The good news? They only have to make one more trip to ANZ Stadium before their bright new future can begin.

More good news for the Wanderers: Saturday night's 1-1 draw means Sydney FC will almost certainly not be snatching the A-League premiership from Perth Glory. Spoiling the hopes of your cross-town rivals is no substitute for actual success of your own, but it'll have to do for now.

It's now been seven derbies in a row without victory in this fixture for the Wanderers. An incredible 785 days. At least this one wasn't a loss, but for too long they've been Sideshow Bob walking in a parking lot scattered with rakes: every footstep into this arena has only delivered them a Sky Blue smack to the face.

It's been so monotonous it's sucked the life out of the Sydney derby, which should be one of the highlights of the A-League calendar. But the next time these two teams meet, it'll be at Bankwest Stadium – and Western Sydney have to make it count.

The new footballing paradise in Parramatta will be the best venue in the competition by a country mile. It should bring back the fans who once provided this club with an intangible sense of magic and expectation.

It also gives them the chance to draw a line in the sand and say "no more". Sydney FC's stranglehold over them cannot be allowed to continue at Bankwest. Losing the first derby there will be a demoralising blow to the psyche of the Wanderers, just at a time when they need to be building it back up.
