It's that time of year again, when dog jumping, sack races and throwing gum boots is all in the name of sport, it's the Hermidale Gymkhana. The family fun day is on again this Easter Sunday, April 21 at the Hermidale Sports Ground, and it's an event not to be missed. There are a number of activities on the day with horse events beginning at 8.30am and the family fun day kicking off at lunchtime. Secretary of the Hermidale Gymkhana Committee Wendy Robb said there would be a big program with activities such as gumboot throwing, dog jumping and the popular inter-district teams challenge. Ms Robb said this year it was Bubba Perry's turn to help coordinate the challenge along with Dominic Kennedy. "It's sure to be interesting," she said. "Seniors have the chance to win up to $250 prize money and there's $150 up for grabs for juniors." There are also a number of novelty events including an Easter egg hunt, foot races and egg throwing contests, and this year Ms Robb said there was a new activity sure to bring out many people's competitive sides. "We have a new event this year, a tug of war, with teams of eight open to both kids and adults," she said. "It's $20 a team to go in it, and there's the possibility to win $250 in prize money. "Then we've got some other events which are free entry because of our sponsors, we've been able to open them up, that's the foot races, the kids and adults egg throwing and Easter egg hunt. "The gumboot throw is always highly entertaining, and adults can win prize money up to $150, so for $5 entry you've got a fair crack. "Dog jumps are only $10 entry and there's $150 prize money up for grabs between first and second." Ms Robb said there would be a barbecue, canteen facilities and a fully licenced bar for those who needed to quench their thirsts after all the activities. "It's a very fun family day out with so much laughter, and a great excuse to get off the land and catch up with your mates," she said. "Even if you don't participate in the events you'll be highly entertained. "It doesn't cost you anything to come in and have a look, I encourage everyone to come along." The event would not be possible without the support of the community and the generosity of the sponsors. "A huge thank you to all the sponsors who help make the day possible, especially with the tough times we've had, without them we wouldn't be able to offer the great prize money we have," Ms Robb said. There is free entry into the fun day, but some activities will have a fee. A working bee will be on this Thursday, April 18 at the Sports Ground for anyone wishing to join.
