Coronation Street spoilers: Heartbreak for Bethany Platt as she falls for gay newcomer James Bailey
Bethany Platt (Lucy Fallon) is set for a new love interest in Coronation Street but shes on a road to heartbreak as newcomer James Bailey (Nathan Graham) is hiding the fact that he is gay.
Footballer James is part of the brand new family headed up by matriach Aggie (Lorna Laidlaw) and he will soon build a friendship with Bethany.
But as they bond, Bethanys interest in him starts to grow beyond platonic, which leads to her having a bit of a let down.
Corrie boss Iain MacLeod told Metro.co.uk: Were quite keen that James knows who he is but has some apprehensiveness about telling his parents, and some apprehensiveness about his teammates finding out – when we meet the character hes on the cusp of bigger things football wise, and is also aware that despite the process that weve made as a society, in lots of areas, homophobia on the terraces is fairly rampant.

Hes scared about the reaction. But not because hes worried that his family will reject him. Its more about the football. Its a big moment for anybody to sit your family down. We wanted to make this a very modern coming out story rather than the ones weve seen.
On the friendship with Bethany, he added: What we dont want from James is that he leads anyone on in particular. Its more that James at every turn tries to do the right thing but ends up leading Bethany on a little bit. James is a fundamentally decent guy, in fact all the family are.
