Cops condemned for naming new patrol dog after Nazi war criminal Erwin Rommel

A sheriffs office has sparked fury after naming its new patrol dog after Nazi war criminal Erwin Rommel.

Lake County Sheriffs Office on Florida unveiled their newest recruit Thursday, and said hed been named after one of their deputies childhood pets.

But officials were forced to hastily rename the bloodhound Scout after facing a barrage of criticism online.

Helene Mccarthy was among those angered by the name, writing: Cute dog. Too bad he got named for a Nazi hero. I find that offensive to me and the dog.

We have plenty of American heroes this fine animal could be named after.

They faced further fury after posting a tweet – since deleted – that included the hash-tagged word Nazi, but no apology.

Erwin Rommel shot to notoriety as one of Nazi Germanys most popular generals during the Second World War. He was made to kill himself in 1944 after his part in a plot to assasinate Adolf Hitler was uncovered

The Sheriffs Offices Facebook page said: Although the original name chosen by Deputy Meintzschel was actually chosen due to a beloved childhood pet he had as an adolescent, he just learned that the name was tied to a Nazi war criminal.
