Coronation Streets Beverley Callard clarifies comments after saying mental health issues will become fashionable

Earlier this year, Coronation Streets Beverley Callard came under fire for comments she made on mental health where she argued that its a subject now being so talked about that were in danger of it becoming fashionable.

However, the actress has now clarified and defended her comments, explaining they were taken out of context and that she had been referring to those in the public eye being responsible in the way they discuss mental health, and as role models being careful in the way they influence fans in how they deal with their own mental health issues.

I think its great if you feel youre in a position and youve recovered enough to talk about it, she said. I think thats great, but I think, especially if youre in the public eye, what you cannot do is say “you know what go eat kale for a week and youll be better.”

We shouldnt tell someone what medication they should take or what they should do about it.

She continued that instead there should be more campaigns for better mental health care.

I think we can talk about it but we can never say “you should do this”. The only way to get better is to get professional help, she said.

Its different for each person. But professional help isnt available for everyone and Its really difficult to get so we need to get that side going.

Its a fight still worth having.

Bev took two months off from work to battle depression three years ago and previously described the feeling of being plunged into a dark hole.

The comments led to her receiving backlash from the likes of Sophie Turner and Nadiya Hussain saw her compare mental health to being like a Gucci handbag.
