New team will tackle drought, water, in NSW government

Drought-stricken farmers will now rely on Northern Tablelands MP Adam Marshall to fight for them in Macquarie Street after he was named Minister for Agriculture and Western NSW on Sunday. In a nod to western NSW, which saw the long-time Nationals seats of Murray and Barwon fall to the Shooters Fishers and Farmers Party, a minister for western NSW was created. Upper Hunter MP Michael Johnsen, a former dairy hand, has been named Parliamentary Secretary for Agriculture and will work closely with Mr Marshall. But when it comes to water issues, which was a contentious issue in the lead up to the state election, it will be Oxley MP Melinda Pavey in the hot seat. It won't be her sole focus though. Premier Gladys Berejiklian and Deputy Premier John Barilaro announced the new cabinet team on Sunday. Mr Barilaro said the government understood regional NSW faced different challenges and the team would focus on those challenges and opportunities like never before. "Our government has always recognised that the regions face different challenges than our cities, and this new team takes that to another level," he said. "The ongoing drought is still the major issue impacting on our communities, particularly in the state's west. That is why we have introduced a dedicated minister for Western NSW while also introducing a Minister for Water." "The new team will help deliver better social outcomes for the most vulnerable and equality of opportunity for people across the state, no matter their background or where they live," Ms Berejiklian added. The new cabinet will be sworn in on Tuesday at Government House.
