Woman with two wombs gives birth twice a month apart

A Bangladeshi mother has shocked the medical community after delivering three healthy babies from two separate wombs.

Arifa Sultana, 20, gave birth to her first child, a son, on 24 February but was rushed back to hospital 26 days later with stomach pains.

When doctors performed an ultrasound they realised Arifa was in labour with twins and she was taken for an emergency caesarean.

The babies – a boy and girl – were perfectly healthy and were discharged from hospital four days after being born.

Doctors diagnosed Arifa with uterus didelphys – a rare condition where a woman is born with two wombs.

The double uterus can sometimes result in a woman developing two separate cervixes and sometimes two vaginas, although this is not always the case.

As a female foetus grows, the uterus starts as two small tubes, which normally join together to create one larger, hollow space.

However, in Arifas case her two tubes did not join completely and she developed two separate wombs.

Her second pregnancy was not discovered as she did not have any ultrasounds prior to her first delivery, Dr Sheila Poddar said.
