Holby City review with spoilers: Bombshell as Anges secret past is revealed

(Picture: BBC)

Clues and hints have been dropped on Holby City for quite a few weeks now, suggesting a more-than-mentor connection between Dominic Copeland (David Ames) and Ange Godard (Dawn Steele). So it may or may not have come as a surprise to you to discover this week that Ange is actually Dominics biological mother. Apparently she gave birth to him when she was only 14 years old and handed him to Carole and Barry Copeland, who adopted him.

When Ange spotted Carole (Julia Deakin) around the hospital she wanted to know who she was. Finally Ange confronted Carole, who didnt remember her. I imagine shes changed quite a bit since she was 14, so we cant blame Carole for that. We met on a grey day in September 1987, Ange told her. I handed you my baby. Clearly Ange remembers it very well indeed.

She still hadnt made the connection between Carole and Dominic, but it happened to be Dominics birthday and Lofty had arranged a little party for him – a very little party, as the only guests were Carole, Sacha (Bob Barrett) and Essie (Kaye Wragg) and it was in the staff kitchen. Festive. But it was there that Ange realised that Dominic is her son.

He still doesnt know, but poor Carole is in bits. She hasnt even told Dominic hes adopted, which upset Ange because Carole promised her that her son would know that his birth mother loved him.

I have to admit I hate everything about this story. Carole and Dominic have always seemed like they have the perfect mother/son relationship. Shes loved him and supported him and embarrassed him in equal measure and shes glorious. Hes her Dazzle, the apple of her eye. I think the reason Carole hasnt told Dom that hes adopted is that there was no need to do it earlier because the scriptwriters only recently thought of it. I may be proved wrong as the story unfolds, but right now Im not on board with it at all.

Elsewhere, Frieda (Olga Fedori) was once again having to deal with some poor, frightened and ill illegal immigrants, this time brought to Holby by Romans friend Ivan. As a doctor and a caring human being, she had no choice but to help. The people were terrified that they would be caught and sent to a detention centre, so she tried to look after them in her boxing room in the basement. It wasnt long before Zosia (Camilla Arfwedson) got involved and eventually Zosia called the authorities, because Frieda couldnt really cope with such ill people without equipment and facilities.

Frieda has now reached a decision – shes left Holby (again) and will go to work for an aid organisation, where she can follow her conscience and make a difference. Gary the dog is going with her.
