Everyone belongs as community come together for Harmony Day | photos

There was a sea of orange united at Larkin oval on Thursday as schools, community members and organisations came together for Harmony Day. The annual event on March 21 and is marked by people coming together to show respect and inclusiveness. Harmony Day coincides with the United Nations' International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. The ongoing theme is 'everyone belongs', and orange is the colour to signify meaningful conversations. Member of the organising committee Michael Gibson said this year marks the 20th anniversary, and it was important for the community to come together hosting one big event. "One of the most important things that we're trying to establish is harmony across our community and getting rid of any hate, or any disinterest in appreciating any culture," he said. "All of the schools and community partners of the AECG got together and decided this was a great opportunity to get everyone in one spot, where everyone belongs and having a great day together." Students from Nyngan Public school, St Joseph's Primary, the Nyngan High School, the Early Learning Centre and Preschool were broken into mixed groups and visited a variety of stations, each focusing on a different country or culture. Students took part in activities from culture or country, learning more about the different cultures from around the world and to celebrate diversity within the community. "It's hands on, it's great learning, but also at each of the stations, which is fantastic, you have a teacher or community member from that culture so they're owning it, it's about their history and what they know of it and everyone appreciating them for who they are," Mr Gibson said. He thanked everyone for helping to organise the event, and the community for their support. "I'd like to thank the organising committee for coming together, but also for everyone who has turned up and has shown some great interest, and really engaged and appreciated people for the individuals they are and the cultures they're from."
