Casualty review with spoilers: Duffy dementia devastation and Archie ruffles feathers

(Picture: BBC)

As well as tragedy looming for Duffy (Cathy Shipton), this week we were introduced to the newest registrar in Casualty, Archie Hudson (Genesis Lynea). Even before the opening credits rolled wed seen her walking out of an induction session and giving her opinion of its merits (or lack of) in no uncertain terms. Shed hardly set foot in the ED before she was announcing that she was aiming to fill the vacant consultants job before too long.

Elle (Jaye Griffiths) was not impressed. Connie (Amanda Mealing) was even less impressed, particularly when certain discrepancies showed up between Archies last appraisal at her previous hospital (which said she was awkward, stroppy etc) and the glowing reference that had helped her get the job at Holby.

So who is the real Archie Hudson? Well, theres little doubt that she is hot-tempered and not exactly restrained when it comes to giving her opinion. Shes clearly a good doctor but she cuts corners and doesnt play things by the book – which almost ended in tragedy for a patient whose brain injury she completely overlooked.

But when she was talking to Connie about her previous hospital, it seems that underlying her hot-headedness is a real passion to make a difference. After she lost a good friend who overdosed due to working under too much pressure, she tried to force some changes and became known as a troublemaker. Well, Connie Beauchamp likes a spirited staff member, but she doesnt like people who are rude and insubordinate and she made it quite clear that Archie would have to knuckle down or her Holby career would be short-lived.

Duffy (Cathy Shipton), of course, has had a very long Holby career, but could it be about to come to an end? After months of worry and speculation, she was finally given the devastating diagnosis that shes in the early stages of vascular dementia. And finally she allowed herself to confide in Charlie (Derek Thompson), though she didnt want (or couldnt handle) his sympathy. Charlie was shocked and desperately wants it not to be true. Duffy thought he should tell the rest of the team what shes dealing with but Charlie wants to keep it between them for now.

Dylan (William Beck) was working on a new (or rather, very old) treatment for wound infection – maggots. Getting the little critters to clean up is apparently the answer to the antibiotics-resistance crisis and has all sorts of benefits. Its a bit yucky to look at, though, and Marty (Shaheen Jafargholi) couldnt cope with it at all.
