Olivia Colman bested a loaded field featuring Emily Blunt, Elsie Fisher, Charlize Theron and Constance Wu to win the Golden Globe for playing Queen Anne in Fox Searchlights The Favourite. The two-time winner took the stage Sunday to thank the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, the studio, director Yorgos Lanthimos, and finally her “bitches Emma [Stone] and Rachel [Weisz].”
“Every second of working with you girls was such a joy,” she said.
The Favourite follows the Duchess of Marlborough (Weisz) and her servant Abigail Hill (Stone) who engage in a sexually charged fight to the death for the body and soul of Queen Anne (Colman) at the height of the War of the Spanish Succession.
The pic had five Golden Globe nominations overall going into Sunday night — including Stone and Weisz against each other in the Supporting Actress race. That category was won by Regina King for If Beale Street Could Talk. Favourite was also nominated in the Screenplay category, won by Romas Alfonso Cuarón.
During her acceptance speech, Colman, who was not subtle, dropped the f-bomb while describing her positive experience making the film. She also said she had to hold back tears onstage because, as she told the crowd, “my entire table will point and laugh at me.”
