Bird Box viewers are not impressed with what the unknown entity in the film was supposed to look like – with some claiming it would have ruined the movie.

Theres no denying Bird Box has captured the imagination of Netflix subscribers, nabbing over 45 million views in its first week as well as a few famous fans.

And its thanks to the mysterious creatures – that we never actually see – that cause survivors of the apocalypse to walk around blindfolded because the sight of the monsters causes people to take their own lives.

Its creepy and has left many a little scared to go outside – but how would you have felt as a viewer if you got a glimpse?

Perhaps you may have slept better.

The visual effects team behind the film designed a creepy creature to appear in the film which stars Sandra Bullock as lead character Malorie.

Howard Berger – Bird Boxs special effects makeup creator – shared an image of the monster on a now-deleted Instagram post that has been reposted on multiple pages.

Giving us a deeper look into the behind-the-scenes look of the unused prosthetics, Berger wrote: Its always a bit disappointing when so much effort goes into something that ends up in the cutting room floor.

But I get it and its always what is best for the final product.

Social media expressed that they wouldnt have been frightened if this particular creature was in Bird Box.

Im glad they never put that in it, its not scary what so ever. Would have ruined it, said one commentator.

Another pointed out that the unknown is what was needed to make the movie a success.

They explained further: That does not look like something that would make people immediately kill themselves. Im glad they cut it, it was much better with them being unknown. It would have ruined the whole effect of the “things” people were seeing. Ambiance of an unknown terror can make a great story, this movie did a good job with it.

But why didnt we get to see what the characters were avoiding?

The movie has left viewers with a whole load of questions – including the one of why we never actually see a single monster during the movie, even though they are the central focus.

Still baffled? Well, as director Susanne Bier has explained, its because the creatures appear in very different forms to everybody who sees them. The creatures mess with your mind; they tap into your deepest fear, the director explained to Radio Times.

And, because they tap into your deepest fear, we cant ever see them, because that deepest fear is going to be different whoever you are.

Bird Box is available to stream on Netflix UK now.
