AACTA International Awards: Roma Takes Best Film & Director; The Favourite Also A Double Winner
The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts is out with the winners of its eighth annual AACTA International Awards, and it was another good night for Alfonso Cuarón and his film about growing up in Mexico City. Roma was named as Best Film during the ceremony at the Mondrian Hotel in Los Angeles, and Cuarón scored the Best Directing trophy.
Having won the same two awards in 2014 for Gravity, Cuarón now holds the record for the most individual AACTA International Award wins, topping countryman Alejandro G. Iñárritus three.
The nights other double winner was The Favourite, which scooped a record 10 wins at the British Independent Film Awards last month. Olivia Colman took Best Actress for playing Englands Queen Anne, and Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara won the Screenplay prize.
Aussie Nicole Kidman won Supporting Actress for her role in the gay-conversion drama Boy Erased, and the Actor awards went to men who played very different kinds of musicians: Rami Malek for his lead role as Queens Freddie Mercury in Bohemian Rhapsody and Mahershala Ali for his supporting turn as jazz pianist Don Shirley, who goes on a concert tour of the Jim Crow South in Green Book.
