***CAUTION: SPOILERS***

Bird Box is basically everyones obsession right now.

Even Kim Kardashians.

But while we may have gripped the edge of our seat for the two hours four minutes Sandra Bullock orienteered a bleak AF world all the while wearing a blindfold, we breathed a sigh of relief at its dramatic conclusion and it was all over.

Remember, SPOILERS.

So its about time our parade was rained on by those who read the book, written by Josh Malerman, that the Netflix flick was based on.

While in the film, were not going to tell you again: SPOILERS, Sandras character Malorie and her son, Boy, and sort-of-adopted daughter, Girl, live through not only the rapids, but about five years of not making eye contact with whatever demon possesses people to gruesomely kill themselves, and they make it to a sanctuary.

There, theyre met with familiar faces in the former school for the blind-turned-refuge centre for those lucky enough to have made it.

In the book, though, well, its not such a happy ending.

You see (pardon the pun), in the film Malorie and the kidlets do indeed make it to the sanctuary. Once there theyre met with a whole heap of blind people who deliberately gouged out their eyes and blinded themselves in order to live without ever seeing the whatever-it-is that kills you.

Positive, eh?

Well, not really, and director Susanne Bier wanted to leave viewers with a more heartwarming feeling post-credits. Isnt that nice.

In a way, pretty much everything Ive done has had some sort of a hopeful ending, she told Polygon.

Im not particularly interested for the audience to leave, from the cinema or their own screen, with a kind of completely bleak point of view. Thats not really what I believe in.

The people are kind of divided on whether they wanted the real ending from the book, or the more positive ending favoured by the director to help us sleep a little easier come bedtime.

The ending to #BirdBox was such crap, I had to look up the book ending because it didnt feel right. Sure enough, @JoshMalerman crafted an amazing ending, but @DirSusanneBier created a milquetoast conclusion that it insults her audiences intelligence.

the ending from the book version of Bird Box wouldve been better, idk why they changed it

Im actually really pissed Birdbox didnt follow the book bc the ending was suppose to be her showing up to the school & everyone had gauged their own eyes out following with her gauging out her own & her kids. Wouldve been cooler ending

I was just reading about how the birdbox movie and book differ (I still plan to read the book) and how the author was adamant about having a cheerful ending and I really appreciated it! I love being scared and I love a thrill- but without joy and cheer what does it matter?!

Glad for #Birdbox more positive ending. So many books I read, games I played, I just didnt have a heart to go through again knowing the ending.

Whether or not youre amped on the chosen finale, the film smashed all sorts of records after it was released on 21 December.

More: Netflix

We can only imagine, a few days into the New Year, a whole lot more people watched it while recovering on the couch.

Bird Box is available to stream on Netflix.
