SuperSport, Highlands Park share the spoils

Cape Town – Highlands Park and SuperSport United played to a 1-1 draw at the Makhulong Stadium.

The Lions of the North enter the Christmas break among the top eight in the Absa Premiership standings, ahead of Cape Town City on goal difference.

A goal from Mothobi Mvala after a lengthy half-time intermission – bad weather delayed play – helped secure the result for the home team, which did not have trouble processing SuperSport scoring the games opener in first half injury time.

SuperSport's Maphosa Modiba swung a boot at the ball from close range, and from a tight angle just seconds before half time.

A combination of poor defending and some poor goalkeeping from Highlands is probably to blame, but the reality was that the Highlands goal-line was breached at a critical time in the fixture.

That was compounded by the fact that Highlands had one of their goals disallowed shortly after going down in the encounter. In the context of the match, and of the season, the comeback was remarkable.

Sundays result was Highlands Parks eighth draw of the season, in a campaign in which they have struggled to gather meaningful momentum.

The quality of the opponent on Sunday is also significant, given that SuperSport United now move up to fourth in the Premiership standings, ahead of defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns.

The draw will be just the tonic for a Highlands team which has not fulfilled its potential this term.
