Underwater stars dazzle at State Championships

Margaret River athletes once again showed they are a force to be reckoned with at the recent annual State Underwater Hockey Championships, held at the South West Sports Centre in Bunbury earlier this month. Three local teams competed at the event, with the Margaret River Underwater Hockey Club sending 16 players to form two mixed adult teams as well as 10 juniors to compete in the State Championships. ”This was the first State competition for a few of our players,” said club Junior Coordinator Kathleen OShea. “The refereeing course held the day before gave some of our members the chance to practice their umpiring skills, earning points towards their refereeing certification.” The junior team faced Perth in the final, defeating their opponents 4-1. “The older, more experienced juniors with one or two national competitions already under their belts mentored our newer players, some of whom are as young as 9,” said Ms OShea. “The Club is so proud of its juniors – the teamwork skills they have developed over the years and the attitude they bring to the sport.” Five juniors are off to Cairns in January to represent WA in the U15s division at the 2019 Underwater Hockey Nationals.
