Sandra Bullock is outspoken about the difficulties of parenting.

After calling for a more diverse representation on screen of what it means to be a mother, the actress has admitted that her family isnt how most people thought it would look – but she couldnt be happier.

The Bird Box actress, whos an adoptive mum to son Louis, eight, and daughter Laila, six, told PEOPLE: Were very lucky that we get to live in this moment in time where we get to choose what our family looks like, and I got to do that in real life.

You imagine so many things for yourself, but when it appears its better than anything you could ever imagine.

The Miss Congeniality star, who plays reluctant mother Malorie who fights to keep her children safe against an unseen monster in Bird Box, said she could relate to the film on some levels.

I think what I loved about this is that it sort of mirrored what I feel about real life, in that my family is not how most people thought it would look, but its better, she admitted.

Sandra adopted her son while she was going through her divorce with ex-husband Jesse James. The couple had started the process together, but after their split the actress decided to continue solo.

Earlier this week she told Press Association: We have got to stop thinking about this idea, which comes from a very fairytale makeup, of what a family looks like, what a partnership looks like, what a mother looks like, what a father looks like.

Thats what I loved so much about this [film]. It was just people being there for each other, loving each other at the worst of times.
