In defence of Justin Biebers Under The Mistletoe and why his Christmas album should be protected at all costs

Lets begin this by explaining Justin Bieber has had a lot of slack over the years – some of it warranted, some of it most definitely not.

And one of the things the 24-year-old has been relentlessly mocked for is his Christmas album, Under The Mistletoe.

If you cast your minds back to 2011, most people were a little confused about why the Baby singer decided to come out with 11 festive songs when he had only released one album prior to this – and on top of all that, a Christmas album was mostly related to those bargain bucket, stocking filler randoms who finished 12th on X Factor the year before.

But it is arguably one of the most slept-on albums produced in modern music, and no, that is not an understatement. Where else can you hear Usher, Boyz II Men and Busta Rhymes belting out some festive reworkings of the best Christmas anthems?

Justin got actual Mariah Carey in the studio for a SuperFestive! remix of All I Want For Christmas Is You, which definitely stands up to the original.

Side note: the actual title is All I Want for Christmas Is You (SuperFestive!), but were here for those brackets and exclamation mark.

If you want something a little more original under your Christmas tree than rejigged covers of festive tracks, Biebs has gone and written some original bangers that could stand the test of time along with the likes of Last Christmas, White Christmas and Rockin Robin.

Mistletoe – a song about Justin spending most of his holidays waiting patiently under the mistletoe for the love of his life – sounds a little corny on the first listen, but bells, clicks and an acoustic guitar have transformed it into a straight up bop.

What more could you ever need?!

However, not every song is quite at bop level. To be honest, we can take or leave the rapping in Drummer Boy, and Christmas Eve – which was produced by Chris Brown – isnt quite up there with Mistletoe and Fa La La.

But his cover of Silent Night more than makes up for a couple of duds – and youll be having to stop yourself chair dancing to his version of Santa Claus Is Coming To Town.

If youre lucky enough to have the deluxe edition, which comes with a solid four more tracks than the normal edition, you get an extra treat of acapella Justin and Boyz II Men harmonising like a dream.

While every other Belieber on the planet is crying out for a fifth album – seriously, where is it hun? – we wouldnt be totally mad with another offering made purely of festive hits.
