Jimmy Bartel joins Giants board as footy director

Geelong triple premiership star and Brownlow medallist Jimmy Bartel will join the GWS Giants board as their football director.

Bartel will join the Giants board next year as football director but remain in Melbourne.

Former Giants foundation player and Melbourne captain James McDonald has also recently joined the club's football sub-committee.

Former teammate Shane Mumford is making a comeback to play at the Giants next year.

Bartel has held off-field roles at the Brisbane Lions and Caulfield Grammar. He is a columnist with The Age and a commentator on Channel Seven and several radio stations.

Giants Chairman Tony Shepherd Bartels knowledge was unquestioned and he would be a valuable addition to the club.

“Jimmy is regarded as one of the most well-rounded people in the football community and were delighted to have him join our board,” said Mr Shepherd.

“His knowledge of the AFL industry is second to none and his work in the community and in business sees him well positioned to contribute to the club in a range of ways.

“Jimmy understands that were a young club with enormous opportunity in front of us, something he is excited to be a part of.”

He is a winner of the AFL Media Association award for best news reporter and a two-time winner of Cricket Victorias cricket writer of the year award.
