Taking on top of the ladder YOBS at the glorious Nest, the Hawks A grade side posted a below par score but still managed to defeat YOBS to go into second spot prior to the Christmas break! The B grade and C grade teams had weekend to forget, but are still within striking distance of finals with a few weeks off. Once again, the majestic Gloucester Park was in pristine condition. Curator Neil and Rumesh have done a ridiculously good job in having all three grounds looking a million dollars. Rumour has it, the Optus Stadium staff have been asking for tips to make sure the Perth Test Match has the same aura around it this weekend. The Hawks also held their annual Thank You day on Saturday to say thank you to the sponsors, supporters, past players and families for everything they do for the Hawks. We also received a sponsorship cheque from our major sponsor Ventura Home Group. Ventura representatives Sunny and Ruby presented the Hawks committee with a $10,000 cheque in what is a huge boost to the Hawks endeavours on and off the field. As a volunteer-driven organisation, the Hawks would not have the fantastic facilities that they do with out the generous support of their many sponsors. As a club we are responsible for the facilities we have,” said Hawks sponsorship organiser Michael Earl. “Unlike other clubs in the BMRCA, we are responsible for the maintenance and works for our turf wicket. The maintenance of our machinery and the upkeep and improvements of the training facilities is our responsibility. “The Shire of Augusta Margaret River do a wonderful job on the ground for us year in year out, which complements the turf wicket we have. “We have been instrumental over the years in improving the facilities we have; from installing a third cricket pitch in Gloucester Park, a complete rebuild of our training nets and storage shed and the results are brilliant. “We thank all of our sponsors and supporters and we hope we are doing you all proud! We wouldnt be where we are without you!” Ventura also have a referral scheme that will donate an added $1000 to the Hawks, or another sporting club of your choice, and also $1000 to the person building, when a successful referral to VHG results in a house built. Another lovely day and another superb wicket… skipper Matty Kent got off to a good start winning the toss and deciding to bat first. Chris McLean fell early, and when Shane Joyce joined Edmonds we looked in good hands and the pair got us to 50 after 15 overs before Joyce was dismissed. Alas the next 10 overs yielded only 20 more runs at the cost of 3 more wickets to see us in the unenviable position of 5/70 at drinks. Tight bowling and field pressure from the Busselton side continued after the break and at 9/109 with 10 overs remaining in the innings things were looking glum. Enter past Hawks premiership captain Glen Ahola, in his first game back after a 6 year hiatus! He made batting look easy and was brilliantly supported by an ever impressive Peter “Ronaldo” Crimp. Together they set about a brave rescue mission, and by the end of 50 overs they were still there unbeaten, putting on a priceless 40 run partnership for the last wicket. This gave the Hawks a glimmer of hope, however we would have to bring all of our trademark pressure and intensity to halt the YOBS batting lineup. Kent rallied the troops and a quick wicket ensued with Columbera in the shed for a duck. However in a close replication of the previous innings, Yobs were 2/50 at 15 overs and in trouble at 6/83 at drinks. It was seriously game on and the Hawks bowling and fielding was first class. Leigh Westcott was superb, bowling perfectly to his field. Matty was his usual brilliant self and Grant Garstone chimed in for a vital first ball wicket of the opposition skipper. In the end though it was the control and variety offered by Rumesh Silva that rewarded him 4/28 from his 10 overs and helped the Hawks to bowl out the Yobs for 130 in the 40th over. A super game of cricket…….a game which shows the Hawks play a never say die brand of cricket, with quality performances shared amongst the whole team. We can go into the festive break now happy and confident with 2nd spot on the ladder! The second rendition of the team song rung out a little more truly this time, although Im not sure our Sri Lankan Panda Rumesh knows the words… if he continues being man of the match we can forgive him. Beth, in her first year of cricket, was captain and after the toss of the coin, found herself opening the batting with Sam. Beth (7) hit her highest score for the season and Sam (20) also combined well later with Caspian (16). Sawyer (21) once again demonstrated powerful stroke play, with Reuben (12) supporting with his smart use of quick singles. Culann (17) and Tom (12) once again combined well together, finishing our 20 over format with a total of 5/150. We commenced our innings in the field extremely well, bowling with control and accuracy. Tom opened the bowling, finishing with figures of 3/9 along with Sam (1/9) and Sawyer (1/14) both bowling in great areas, putting the batsmen under pressure. Each player contributed well in the field, with special mention going to Sam (1 stumping, 1 catch, 1 direct runout) and Sawyer (2 direct runouts). Dunsborough finished with a total of 8/111. As Coach, I am very proud of the progress made by each and every player so far this season. From Sawyers powerful stroke play to Caspians beautiful batting technique supported by Reubens quick singles, and Toms well timed drives and leg glances. Add in Culanns awesome fielding and deadly accurate arm in the field, with Beths excellent progress in developing her bowling action and Sams lethal inswinger, this team is truly committed to getting the best out of each other.
