Once in a lifetime Timor-Leste experience

Students from MRSHS Timor-Leste Experience 2018 have returned home having survived 40-degree heat, monsoonal rains, mud and travelling by local transport. All students reported it was “a once in lifetime experience that makes us appreciate what we have at home so much more” and it “is humbling to see how they live and how happy they are compared to us”. Highlights of the trip included installing two playgrounds at two pre-schools, playing in the rain and mud with the children and making new friends. Rotarian, Brian Warren and Lion, Gudy Hangartner officially opened the playground. Another highlight was a visit to an Orphanage in Dili. We were able to donate goods of school equipment, books, library bags and musical instruments to the children on behalf of people of Margaret River and South Darwin Rotary Club. We also visited a Health Clinic on Atauro Island and mobile Child Health Clinics in Bacau. This highlighted the lack of equipment, medical supplies and support services at these clinics and showed the difficulties medical staff work with on a daily basis. We presented donated goods to both clinics which will assist them in their work. We are grateful for generous donations from Pharmacy 777 and St Johns Ambulance Sub-Centre Margaret River. Staff at both clinics were very excited to receive the goods. The trip is sponsored by the Rotary Club of Margaret River and the Lions Clubs of Cowaramup, Augusta (Leeuwin) and Margaret River. We are now looking forward to the next trip in 2019.
