What a way to start 2019 it would be if Peter Barlow and Carla Connor got back together in Coronation Street – as they spend the last moments of a very turbulent 2018 together, they get reflective and honest with one another and after sparks fly, they are left with a decision to make.

Across the year, they have been dancing around their intense feelings for one another, both knowing that the love each other but also aware that every time they have tried to make things work, they have ended up hurt.

As Peter faces a career crisis in the snooker hall, Carla joins him for a late night game – and breaks through his habit of compulsively buying into businesses. But as they put their cards on the table and then talk turns to their relationship, what will come of it as tension rises and a kiss may be shared?

Chris Gascoyne, who plays Peter, told Metro.co.uk: Theres some really good scenes on New Years Eve. They have a game of snooker and she wins. He didnt know she could play snooker. She says if you lose then you have to sell this place, youre just jumping from one thing to another just to get away from that and youre going to do the same again. She beats him and he realises that shes right about the snooker hall. Theyre there on their own and they get very close. Its a case of will they or wont they?

I think that they will. Its more interesting as once they are back together, were back into that domestic kind of arguments, who buys the tea bags and who does the cooking. I think at the moment its pitched very well. Also theres other stories around its not just those two but even in the next set of stories, theyre still very close and theres unfinished business.

Asked whether its the case that Carla is Peters one, Chris added: I think it looks like that. Theyre had an on off relationship for some 12 years now. I think thats what the audience wanted.

It remains to be seen whether they will reunite but Chris is certainly keen for more scenes with Alison King, who plays Carla – as are many viewers. And 2019 gets off to a positive start for Peter too.

Chris revealed: At the moment, the next year is looking fantastic. Its all going to happen, he thinks “this is it, Im happy, Im not doing this job”, hes telling everybody hes a free spirit. He thinks hes got away from the rat race. Hes very zen.

Carla buys him a boat and he throws himself into the project.

Chris smiled: Carla gifts him a boat. Its one that would sail to the Caribbean. Its beautifully called Lost Boy – he has to do it all up which he does to pristine condition with a certain person that we cant name. A very unlikely person whos in the show. Its not Simon.

His plan is that hes really happy doing the boat, but hes doing it up to leave. He thinks hes going to go. I dont think hes having a mid-life crisis. Hes always had a crisis, I dont think mid-life is any different. Youd think it would be a car, but its not, its a boat.

He sees is as a way to leave, but its a dream. Thats the sad thing, hes working on this boat with the idea of “Im going to do this up and Im going to leave all this behind”. Thats the great thing about it, why hes put so much work into it, its the tragedy of what happens…

So it sounds like the New Year joy may well be short lived then…
